A note on the series
I’m drawn to the American places that seem to hold a life just outside the frame: a diner after midnight, a motel room, a laundrette under fluorescent light. They feel familiar even when you cannot place them. Their worn surfaces suggest routines, departures and people passing through.
Robert Frank’s The Americans is a point of departure for this project. I’m interested in the attention a photograph can give to an ordinary moment, and the feeling that something larger is happening beyond what we can see.
In Americana, I let that feeling become physical. A coffee pot pours beyond the point of enough. A mattress refuses to rest. A raincloud leaks onto a laundrette floor. Each scene begins with a recognisable place and lets one impossible thing disturb it.
The first chapter, Open All Night, lives in the hours when tiredness makes everything slightly strange. I want the images to carry humour, unease and tenderness together, leaving room for you to recognise your own version of what is happening.
