Goya’s original Saturn: a pale figure with wide eyes and clenched hands emerging from a dark background
Saturn, Francisco de Goya, 1820–1823. Museo Nacional del Prado. Original painting, shown separately from the film interpretation.

The painting behind the flight

Keep the stare.
Find the depth.

Goya’s darkness, the grip of the hands and those wide, uneven eyes give the film its starting point. The portrait reference is a painterly adaptation, rather than an unchanged museum reproduction.

The camera journey and the tear are additions for this interpretation. Keep the figure still and let the changing viewpoint reveal the arm, shoulder and head as a continuous space.

Give the camera somewhere to go

Past the arm.
Into the tear.

The arm passes close to the lens. Beyond it, the camera moves around the head and approaches the eye. Each change in viewpoint should reveal depth.

A tear attached to the lower lid becomes the final doorway. The opening composition appears inside its refraction, ready for the camera to enter and begin again.
